The past few weeks have been extremely difficult, and I’ve been going through a lot during my recovery. It’s now been just over two weeks since I have had a life changing accident, but I can honestly say I’m so thankful to be alive. I was at home and a package was being delivered that I ordered for my pup by UPS. My dog, Mia, loves the UPS driver and always gets excited when he comes by. As he was preparing the delivery, Mia stood by wagging her tail, eager to say hi. Just as he was standing there looking at her, a car was coming from the opposite direction. The driver had her eyes on the UPS guy and didn’t see that Mia was standing there. She hit Mia at full speed, throwing her in the air and in a ditch. Mia was screaming, and the sound and the look on her face was something I can’t begin to describe. I have never felt so helpless and my heart hurting in pain for what she was experiencing in that very moment. I ran to her in a panic and knew immediately I had to act fast. I got her into my car and was on my way to the emergency vet. About 2–3 minutes into the drive, I realized that the heat in my car was on full blast. I started to feel extremely overheated. I was in full panic mode, breathing heavily, trying to calm myself and slow down my breathing enough to help Mia. Within moments, everything started to go white, and I felt like I was going to pass out. I tried desperately to keep my eyes open and thought I was slowing down to pull over, but I lost consciousness while driving I can not remember the rest. It felt like only a few seconds, but I started to hear voices, then feel the pain all throughout my body. I began to slowly open my eyes and realized that I was in the hospital. I had run off the road, collided with another vehicle (which is completely totaled), and continued movement several hundred feet before slamming into a concrete wall that finally stopped my car. I was life flighted to the hospital. I am not able to drive for a few weeks due to my injuries and will need to get a new vehicle. I suffered a concussion and heavy head trauma, broke 6 ribs, and sustained multiple fractures. It’s been incredibly difficult to move, and I’m still very limited. One of my knuckles has bone damage, but thankfully there were no other broken bones. I have a few hematomas, including one in my neck. I required three layers of stitches under my chin from a deep laceration, but they were able to close it well that it may not even be noticeable with time. My knees were badly injured from the impact, and I’ve had a lot of pain in my ankles, making it hard to walk. Despite all this, each day I’m making major progress. I can now walk around and I am getting very close to being able to get up and down on my own. I truly thank God for my life and His protection. As for Mia, she’s has not been doing well. We’ve attempted multiple surgeries and to put her hips back in place, but recent X-rays showed this week that she won’t be able to walk again unless we take major action. I have just brought her home yesterday from transferring her to State College for an intensive surgery to bolt her hips into place. This is my last attempt to give my pup a real chance at life and recovery. I feel that I could not live with myself if I did not do everything I can in this situation to give my dog another chance with life after everything she has done for me over the past several years. It’s been incredibly hard to process everything, but I’m holding onto faith regardless of the outcome and trusting God through it all. She has made it through the surgery, but it will involve a lot of physical therapy and I hope that she can heal properly.
